CAJUN DANCE CLASSESA Cajun is a descendant of the Acadians. Driven from their homes by the British, they settled in Louisiana. Cajun music, an emblematic music of Louisiana, is rooted in the ballads of the French-speaking Acadians of Canada. It is often mentioned in tandem with the Cajun-influenced zydeco form of music. These French Louisiana sounds have shaped American popular music for many decades, especially country music, and have created a pop culture through mass media, such as television commercials. Cajun music and dance offers an infectious beat and a lot of forward drive. The public dance in a dance hall is called a fais do-dos. Cajun dance partners will cover the dance floor with the most common of Cajun dances, the Waltz and the Cajun Two-step. Included in this class will be the Cajun jitterbug and the Zydeco Two-step. The music holds firm to a basic rhythm with staccato style notes, including lots of fiddle double stops. Many songs that have become standards in the Cajun music repertoire were first recorded in the 1920's and 30's. The music and dance is so popular now that towns throughout America, such as Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Atlanta, have a Cajun dance every week. Instructor Bill Niblack has been teaching Cajun dancing for 20 years throughout the United States. Whether you are a cracker-jack dancer or a beginner, Bill will easily teach you the dance. There will be an hour of dance lessons and an hour of dancing following the lesson. Cost: $30 per person for a 6 week course, or $60 per couple. Dates: September 19, 2009 and every following Saturday night through October 24, from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Contact Bill Niblack at 573-996-4923or Fran Harrison at kenscott6217@earthlink.net To see a video on Cajun dance, go to google videos and search for Cajun - Joe Douglas & The American Cajun Band.
